Abney Unearthed - Remapped, Researched, Rediscovered

Hackney History Festival is back for another year to highlight the borough’s rich and diverse past to life at venues across Hackney. Come along to participate in talks, walks, and guided tours showcasing some of the area’s most iconic buildings and spaces.
About This Event
Opened in 1840, Abney Park is one of London’s ‘Magnificent 7’ Victorian cemeteries, located in Stoke Newington. The 32 acre site is the resting place of over 200,000 people. Designated a nature reserve in 1993 it is also home to a wide variety of flora and fauna. Abney Unearthed is an exciting project to remap the cemetery and discover more about the people buried there. A team of dedicated volunteers are adding missing information to the burial records and researching the people, bringing their diverse stories to life. Haydn who runs the project will explain why it is so vital, and will introduce the exhibition running at the Archives.
